Pictures of buildings mentioned in the “Suffolk” volume of “The Buildings of England” series by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner. Tudor Georgian
I could not understand Sir Nikolaus’s compass and logic here but this may be because the roads around the Eseex border have been changed for the modern A12 which runs close by this end of the village. It is possible the County boundary has changed as well, although I have not checked. I’ll have to ask a local resident one day.
Priest’s House is straightforward, as is Brook Farm (not yet pictured) but the section “towards the SW exit, i.e. the bridge across the Stour and into Essex” defeated me. I could not find houses called Corner House, Weaver’s House or Bay House. There is a spectacular Tudor building on the corner past the bridge and into Essex (now Le Talbooth restaurant) which is shown for completeness. There is a corner, further back from the border, well into Suffolk and the village, which has a couple of nice houses which are also shown but do not really fit the descriptions. There is a Mill Stream which I don’t think would be confused with the Stour. There was also a semi-derelict house that is un-named nearer to the border but still in the village and Suffolk. These are shown for interest - but only the Priest’s House is confirmed.
